UCI faculty have Hollywood connections

Here's the pitch: A brilliant neuroscientist who can identify psychopaths by studying their brain imaging scans and genetic data makes a startling discovery. After learning there are eight killers among his ancestors — including notorious ax murderer Lizzie Borden, a distant cousin — he finds that he shares their biological predisposition to murder. Mitigating environmental factors such as a happy childhood and stable home life have saved him from becoming a killer, and now he's using his scientific sleuthing abilities to help the FBI track down murderers.

The goal of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute: "Eliminate blindness by the year 2020," said Dr. Roger Steinert, institute director.

The spirit of giving was in the air this past Sunday at an event supporting the School of Humanities. Garo and Sylvie Tertzakian opened their home and their guests generously opened their hearts and wallets to support UC Irvine’s continued course offerings in Armenian history. This marks the fourth year the Tertzakians have hosted fellow Armenians from the Orange County community, with this year’s event raising close to $80,000, more than the past three years combined. Sylvie, a former adjunct professor at Chapman University; and Garo, a renowned specialist in urology, are committed to seeing quarterly courses offerings in Armenian history grow into a bona fide Program in Armenian Studies with an endowed chair in Armenian history.

Ray Watson Gift Enhances Regional History Collections

The Libraries are pleased to announce a generous gift by Ray Watson to support the preservation and growth of the Libraries' collections on the planning and development of the City of Irvine, the UCI campus, and surrounding communities in Orange County. In addition to donating his professional and personal papers, Watson also established the Raymond L. Watson Library Fund to help make UC Irvine's regional history collections accessible to researchers from around the world.

"I am very pleased to support the UCI Libraries and their critical role in documenting our local history," said Watson. "The vision and planning behind the development of Irvine and the UCI campus is quite unique and it is important that it be preserved for students and researchers in perpetuity. I am glad to be involved in this important effort to build this collection and encourage others to do the same."

"The Rememberers" UC Irvine memory research featured in Orange Coast magazine

Last December, nearly 18 million Americans tuned in an episode of CBS' "60 Minutes" in which UC Irvine's Center for Cognitive Neuroscience hosted a first-ever gathering of one of the most elite groups on the planet. At first glance, the five participants seemed to have little in common: a reporter from a small AM radio station in Wisconsin, a Cleveland man who frequently wins prizes in trivia contests, a New York-based violinist, a TV producer-writer, and actress Marilu Henner, who starred in the sitcom "Taxi" 30 years ago.

But the disparate bunch all shared one startling characteristic.

"Peace is not something you wish for," Sir Richard Branson said Tuesday night at UCI's Student Center. "It's something you make, something you do, something you are, something you give back."
Sir Richard Branson, the world-renowned British industrialist who built the Virgin Group into more than 360 companies, limped into the UC Irvine Student Center's Pacific Ballroom on Tuesday night, still recovering from leg surgery. But he was off and running once he began speaking to the standing-room-only crowd.

UCI stem-cell treatment is a world first

A therapy for acute spinal cord injuries developed by a UC Irvine scientist will become the world's first clinical trial of a treatment using human embryonic stem cells.
Geron Corp. of Menlo Park announced Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its plans to conduct phase one clinical trials with patients at a number of locations in the United States.
The therapy was created by UC Irvine scientist Hans Keirstead and his colleague, Gabriel Nistor.
"This is a first for the spinal cord field, a first for the stem-cell field," Keirstead said Friday. "Most importantly, it's a victory for the patient community, which really has nowhere to turn. There are no treatments for spinal cord injury."

New hope for spinal cord injuries

Jon Wilhite, lone survivor of the car crash that killed Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others, says he owes his against-the-odds recovery to orthopaedic spine surgeon Dr. Nitin N. Bhatia and UC Irvine Healthcare's extraordinary medical staff.

Wilhite was gravely injured in the crash on April 9, 2009. The force of the collision broke the fragile bone and ripped the ligaments that attached his head and his spine, a condition known as internal decapitation. Dr. Bhatia said only muscles and skin held them in place.
