A Significant Career in Statistics at UC Irvine

Bob Newcomb has been making a difference in statistics at UC Irvine and in the surrounding community for more than 40 years. As a lecturer in statistics he introduced the field of statistics to thousands of students. As a result of his enthusiasm for the field many chose statistics as their career. During this time he also recognized that researchers, both on campus and in the community, need statistical support for their scientific research. Bob stepped up to provide this much needed support, helping countless researchers design scientific investigations and analyze the data from the resulting studies. His experience providing such service led him to found the UC Irvine Center for Statistical Consulting in 1996. He directed the Center for 15 years helping campus investigators generate millions of dollars in grant funding.

Most recently, Bob played a critical role in forming the Department of Statistics in 2002. The Department now houses the Center and supports Bob's vision of introducing statistics to students and encouraging their enthusiasm to follow through on statistics as a career. Through the Robert L. Newcomb Graduate Fellowship Fund we honor Bob's many contributions and ensure that students of statistics continue to benefit from them.
